Glazer launches bid for Man Utd (go back to the homepage) The US sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer this afternoon launched a formal takeover bid for Manchester United after buying the 28.7% stake of Irish racing tycoons JP McManus and John Magnier. Despite the opposition of fans, Mr Glazer's run at the world's most popular football club seems unstoppable as he already owns 28% of Manchester United. Last month, the takeover panel imposed a deadline of May 17 on Mr Glazer to make a formal bid or walk away for at least six months. Shareholders United, the club's supporters' group, is trying to acquire enough shares in the club to block Mr Glazer, the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. |
