Qatari investors reportedly held secret talks with Manchester United last week, proposing a potential £1.5 billion takeover from the club’s current owners, the Glazer family – according to a report in The Guardian.

However, yesterday the club denied reports suggesting that an approach had been made and reiterated that the club is not for sale.

It is believed that the approach was made by Qatar Holding – an investment group controlled by Qatari Royal Family – shortly after the Arab state secured the right to host the 2022 World Cup.

Talks seemed to have collapsed as the Glazers currently value the club at £2bn, half-a-billion more than the Qatari group, who recently agreed a £125m shirt sponsorship deal with Barcelona.

The Glazers originally paid £800m for the club in 2005, a figure which was raised by numerous loans secured against the club’s assets, and are now believed to owe £530m.

Further sources suggest that the Qataris will return with a higher offer as they aim to boost their profile in world football over the next decade, building up to the staging of the 2022 World Cup on home soil.
