Torch-lit protest at Glazer (go back to the homepage)

ANGRY Manchester United supporters have organised an anti-Malcolm Glazer torch-lit protest immediately prior to next Wednesday’s Champions League match with AC Milan.

By then, United fans could know whether Glazer is to push through his takeover attempt, but even if the American’s intentions remain undecided, they believe it is a major opportunity to put their point across.

The ‘Not For Sale Coalition’ revealed the march will start at the Old Trafford Metrolink stop next to Lancashire County Cricket ground at 7pm and proceed down Sir Matt Busby Way. It will be similar to the protest held before October’s Premiership clash with Arsenal, when thousands marched peacefully, carrying banners proclaiming their desire to keep United out of private hands.

Mark Longden, chairman of the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association, said: "We are calling on all supporters to show their opposition to Glazer taking over our club. It’s time for us to show the board that the business is doomed if this or any other individual takes over our club. It’s a big night on the pitch, let’s make it a big night off it as well."

Shareholders United spokesman Oliver Houston added: "It’ll probably be like something out of a Steven Spielberg movie, we’re telling people to bring down torches.

"It’s a symbolic act to reiterate that if Glazer and his people start putting out stories that the silent majority are in favour [of the bid], this will show that it’s a mass movement of every single United fan, joining with the board, the players and the manager, in saying we don’t want to be interfered with."

Glazer began limited due diligence on Monday as he assesses whether his intended £800million-bid plans stack up. United chief executive David Gill claimed last Friday that Glazer’s approach was "aggressive" and potentially "damaging" and stated he did not feel it was likely the club’s board would be able to recommend a formal offer on the terms placed in front of them, but supporters remain wary.

There have already been suggestions Glazer would alter his proposals to ensure Gill’s backing and with the intentions of major shareholders John Magnier and JP McManus unclear, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner could yet succeed in his aims.

Fans have already warned of a total boycott of United’s merchandising operation should Glazer take control.
