United owner Glazer suffers stroke (go back to the homepage) LONDON, England -- Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer has been released from hospital after suffering a stroke on Easter Sunday. The 78-year-old, who controversially took control of the Premier League giants in a $1.4 billion takeover last summer, was admitted to a Florida clinic after suffering the attack. The news will come as a shock to fans of both United and Glazer's NFL team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The secretive nature of the Glazer family meant there had been no indication that he was ill, let along hospitalized. A statement released on Tuesday on behalf of his son Joel has confirmed that Glazer is still suffering from impaired speech and a lack of mobility in his right arm. "On behalf of the entire Glazer family, I want to thank everyone at the Cleveland Clinic for their outstanding care," said Joel Glazer. "My father's spirits are high and doctors expect his condition to improve with rehabilitation." Glazer has left the day to running and liaison with the Old Trafford management to sons Joel, Ave and Bryan and has yet to attend a Red Devils game. He became a hate figure amongst a section of United fans who were bitterly opposed to the takeover, claiming it would saddle the club with huge debts. A source close to the Glazer camp confirmed to the Press Association that he had spoken to Joel, who had been eager to stress his father's life was not in any danger. "The key thing is Malcolm has left hospital after only eight days," said the source. "His speech and mobility have been impaired but mentally, he is 100 per cent alert and his life is not in danger. "As far as Manchester United is concerned, it is business as usual." Post your views on the topic! Click here |
